The Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association has elected Jim Halliday as president for the 2003-2004 year.

Halliday has been actively involved in the self-governing professional association since becoming an Alberta land surveyor in 1978.

He is president of Midwest Surveys Inc., a company with offices across Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Edmonton-based Biomira Inc. has promoted Marilyn Olson to the post of vice-president of regulatory affairs.

Olson joined the company (BIOM-Nasdaq; BRA-TSX) in 1989 as manager of regulatory affairs.

Biomira is a biotechnology company specializing in the development of innovative therapeutic approaches to cancer management.

Octane Energy Services Ltd. has named James Rathwell as president and CEO.

Rathwell has more than 25 years of experience in the oil and gas services sector.

He was a founding share-holder and the president and CEO of Bowridge Resource Group Inc. from August 1993 to November 2001, when it was sold to an energy fund.

He replaces Myron Tétreault, who has been appointed vice-president, corporate development.

Octane Energy Services Ltd. (OES-TSXV) is an energy services company that provides oilfield, pipeline and facilities construction services.

John Kowal has been named vice-president of finance and chief financial officer of Calgary-based Deer Creek Energy Limited.

Kowal has nearly two decades of experience, including senior treasury and financial positions with several multi-national companies. Most recently, he was treasurer of Canadian Hunter Exploration Ltd.

Deer Creek Energy Limited is a privately held corporation specializing in the application of horizontal drilling and steam injection in large-scale heavy oil and bitumen development.

David Lifschultz is taking the chief executive’s chair at Genoil Inc. He will continue with his current duties as chairman of the board.

Genoil (GNO-TSXV) is a Calgary-based technology development company providing solutions to the oil and gas industry through the use of proprietary technologies.

Gerry DeSorcy

Energy industry regulator Gerry DeSorcy has been named chair of the Canadian Gas Potential Committee (CGPC).

He takes over from Roland Priddle, a former chairman of the National Energy Board.

DeSorcy is a regulatory consultant with nearly 50 years experience at technical and administrative levels, including 38 years with the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (AEUB).

He was extensively involved in policy development and application in areas such as technology, conservation, business and sustainable development.

DeSorcy was chairman and CEO of the AEUB at the time of his retirement in 1993. He was also the initial chairman of Alberta’s Natural Resources Conservation Board.

The CGPC is a volunteer organization comprising about 50 geoscientists from industry and government who assess the magnitude and characteristics of Canada’s natural gas resources.

Dufton Lewis has stepped down as chief financial officer of Davnor Water Treatment Technologies Ltd. of Calgary. He will continue as a director of the company.

Davnor manufactures water-treatment solutions for operations including rural and urban households, municipalities, construction and oilfield camps and humanitarian development.
