Architects and engineers have more to worry about than meeting their next assignment deadline. They have to think about the job after that. And the one after that.
These dedicated professionals are busier than they've ever been, particularly those who work in Alberta's full-throttle business environment.
As such, many tend to overlook an issue which should be uppermost in their minds - liability insurance. That's why it makes sense for architects and engineers to discuss their situation with a consultative group of professionals that has taken the time to carefully explore each of the specific issues most relevant to such highly specialized fields.
That's Jones Brown, an insurance "boutique" that doesn't try to be all things to all people.
"When we decide to service a particular client sector, we go all out to understand each pertinent issue as thoroughly as possible," says Mark Terrill, FCIP, managing partner of Jones Brown's Calgary office.
"If a buyer opens the door at Jones Brown, he's going to be impressed on a number of levels: We offer superior product knowledge, outstanding customer service and a competitive price point, right down the line," Terrill adds.
In recent years, Jones Brown has made every effort to enhance and amplify its coverage for architects and engineers. Terrill and his people call it "insurance by design," a custom-crafted series of products introduced by Jones Brown partner David Gray, CIP, and colleague Don Taylor, who heads up the business development division.
Julie Shepherd, senior associate with many years of experience in professional liability, rounds out the 'A&E' team. Julie was instrumental with the policy enhancements and along with Gray and Taylor are particularly proud of the relationship they've been able to build with Lloyd's of London, perhaps the world's most famous and highly respected international underwriter.
"In the past five years or so, many architects and engineers have watched helplessly while their premiums have skyrocketed," notes Gray. "Some purchasers feel they've been paying a lot of money but not getting the best products in return."
However, in tandem with Lloyd's and other providers, Jones Brown has put together an unbeatable package. "We're coming along with a terrific product and a price point that's a lot more competitive," Gray adds.
In Ontario, provincial legislation makes insurance protection mandatory. But that's not the case in Alberta, where some analysts believe as many as 40 per cent of architects and engineers carry no protection whatsoever.
That's unwise, to say the least. Because the stakes are high. "It's dangerous," Terrill concurs. "Such people are risking everything. Even those professionals who work on the periphery of a large project can find themselves implicated when something goes wrong. We're seeing more lawsuits of that kind. It can hurt and hurt big."
A full service brokerage/ consultancy, Jones Brown addresses a full range of insurance requirements while specializing in oil and gas, technology, manufacturing, aviation personal insurance, as well as professional liability.
