Art Smith has been named chairman of the board of directors at the Van Horne Institute for International Transportation and Regulatory Affairs.

Smith, who replaces Gerry Maier, is chairman of the U of C’s Calgary Centre for Innovative Technology and the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies.

A leader in the Calgary community, Smith is a former alderman, MLA and was elected three times to the House of Commons. He is also a former Canadian delegate to the United Nations.

Born in Calgary, Smith served in the Second World War as a bomber pilot with the Royal Air Force and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

The Van Horne Institute was founded as a not-for-profit organization in 1991 with co-operation from industry, the U of C and the province. Its mandate is to help all sectors address transportation and related regulatory issues relevant to the well-being and growth of industry and commerce.

Charles Hantho has joined the board of directors at Alternative Fuel Systems Inc.

Hantho is the chairman of Dofasco Inc., Camco Inc. and Hamilton Utilities Corp. He also serves as a director of Inco Ltd., Telemedia Corp. and TransAlta Corp. A member of the Order of Canada, Hantho has served with numerous national groups and committees studying environmental issues.

Alternative Fuel Systems Inc. (ATF–TSE) is an environmental technology company providing solutions to problems caused by global engine exhaust emissions.

AFS has developed and commercialized electronic engine management technologies that enable diesel and gasoline engines to operate using natural gas.

Corey Keith has been appointed senior investment manager at AVAC Ltd. Keith has spent 20 years in the banking industry and will be responsible for evaluating investment opportunities and providing advice to AVAC clients. AVAC is a not-for-profit corporation that focuses on aiding the growth and development of the Alberta agriculture industry through investment and mentoring for new ventures and agriculture projects.

James Kemp has joined TransAlta as its executive VP, Independent Power Projects.

Kemp, most recently at Tractebel Power in Houston, Tex., spent the better part of his career with Enron Corp., first in an engineering and maintenance capacity and later at the head of the company’s international engineering operations. Kemp is now located in Calgary.

Terri Fisher, chief technology officer for Patchgear.com has left the company. Fisher had been with Patchgear.com since its inception, and resigned in order to pursue other opportunities, said CEO Richard LeBlanc. LeBlanc has assumed all technology responsibilities.

Patchgear (PG–CDNX) provides marketplace solutions that enhance relationships between manufacturers, existing distribution channels and customers.

Mark Ruthenberg has been elected president of Alberta New Media/Calgary. Ruthenberg succeeds Darryl Kaminski, now past president who remains on the board. Also elected at the annual general meeting were John Blake, VP, and Thom Eggertson, secretary and treasurer.

Alberta New Media is a non-profit organization formed in 1998 to promote, educate and create awareness in the new media industry.
