The Alberta Science and Technology (ASTech) Leadership Awards Foundation has announced the finalists and recipients who will be recognized for their outstanding achievement, innovation and leadership at the 12th annual ASTech gala.
ASTech Awards recognize individuals and companies on the forefront of work in science and technology and related business, in categories ranging from commercial achievement to innovative research, and exemplary individual contributions.
“We are paying respect to those Albertans whose work has impact not only within Alberta, but also on the global population. The world-class work being done in Alberta has application and implication for everyone’s lives,” said Martin Kratz, chair of the ASTech Awards Foundation.
Among those honoured is William Cochrane, founding dean of the University of Calgary’s faculty of medicine, who will receive the ASTech Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Alberta Science and Technology Community.
Other 2001 ASTech award categories and finalists, from which award recipients will be chosen, are:
* Leaders of Tomorrow (under 30 years of age), presented by Alberta Innovation and Science: John Doucette, TRLabs; Jocelyn Grozic, University of Calgary; and Talib Rajwani, University of Alberta.
* Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Science: Robert Stewart, U of C; Curtis Strobeck, U of A; and John Wallace, U of C.
* Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Technology: Terry Allen, U of A; Gerard Lachapelle, U of C; and Om Malik, U of C.
* Outstanding Commercial Achievement in Alberta Science and Technology (gross sales less than $25 million per annum): BioWare Corp.; Fifth Dimension Information Systems Inc.; and Global Thermoelectric Inc.
In addition, 10 ASTech prizes will also be presented to recognize achievement in specific areas or industries. This year’s recipients are:
* Special Award, Robert Crawford;
* Al-Pac/ASTech Innovation in Integrated Landscape Management (a new award), Stan Boutin, U of A;
* Outstanding Commercial Achievement in Alberta Science and Technology, (gross sales more than $25 million per annum), CSI Wireless Inc.;
* Outstanding Contribution to the Alberta Science and Technology Community, William Cochrane, U of C;
* NRC/ASTech Innovation in Industrial Research Prize (north of Red Deer), Russell N.D.E. Systems Inc.;
* NRC/ASTech Innovation in Industrial Research Prize (Red Deer and south), Alterna Technologies Group Inc.;
* Syncrude/ASTech Innovation in Oil Sands Research Prize, Donald E. Sheeran;
* AVAC/ASTech Innovation in Agricultural Science, James H. Helm, Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development;
* Excellence in Science and Technology Journalism, Specialized Publication, Tony Kryzanowski, contributing editor, Logging and Sawmilling Journal; and
* Excellence in Science and Technology Public Awareness, Operation Minerva.
Founded in 1989, the Alberta Science and Technology Leadership Awards (ASTech) Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with the mission to identify and celebrate outstanding achievements in science and technology.
The awards gala will be held Friday, Oct. 19, at the Telus Convention Centre in Calgary. The black-tie Calgary event is expected to attract more than 1,000 of Alberta’s top scientists and business leaders.
