Axia NetMedia’s new president racks up business achievements at the same rate some people score tennis points.
Murray Wallace has an awe-inspiring resume that includes deputy minister of finance in Saskatchewan.
He has also been a senior executive or CEO for Royal Trust, Wellington Insurance and Avco Financial Services Canada. Wallace is also head honcho at Park Street Capital Corporation, an investment and consulting company.
As well, he’s on the board of directors of IPSCO, Crown Life and Western Surety. A new corporate crown for him appears to be all in a day’s work.
His appointment was one of three announced recently by Axia Netmedia Corp. president CEO Art Price. (NetMedia is the division of Axia which spearheads development of online knowledge and communication software.)
Joining the company as vice-president of NetMedia Products is John Maynard. Maynard, most recently president of Avco Financial Services Canada, has a strong track record in leading high-performing sales and service organizations, Price says.
“His background in leading successful change in fast-paced organizations spans both the financial and publishing industries.”
Nancy Gottfred, previously controller for Canadian Regional Airlines, will head up NetMedia’s financial section.
Price, formerly CEO of Husky Oil, took Axia public in July 1995, when it had one office with eight employees and annual revenue of $200,000.
On its fifth anniversary, it had revenue of more than $65 million, 630 employees and 17 offices across Canada and in England.
Shares on the TSE trade at about $6, with a yearly high of $18.50 and a low of $5.
Bill French is the new executive vice-president of media partnerships for Calgary-based Megawheels Inc., a provider of software and Internet solutions for the newspaper automotive and publishing sectors. French was previously with Beamscope, a computer video-games provider.
“Bill will be working to position Megawheels globally in adding and maintaining new media partnerships,” says Megawheels president and CEO Marty Hilsenteger.
The company already has partnership agreements with the Globe and Mail in Canada and the Evening Standard of London, England.
It plans to use the recent launch of its U.K.-based Web site (www.eswheels.co.uk) as a base for expansion into Europe. Megawheels Inc., established in 1995, is also a provider of dealer management software designed to optimize automotive retailers’ management systems and improve profitability.
Barclay Hunter has joined Knowledge Impact Inc. as a senior consultant. He previously worked with Danatech Educational Services, developing Internet-based safety training courses.
Knowledge Impact offers customized e-learning and performance support solutions. It is best known for KnowledgeMate, a technology-based training solution. The company’s other senior project manager is Catherine Todd.
Bryce Mitchell, director of sales and services for Canada, launched the firm’s Calgary office four months ago. The company employs more than 20 people here.
Tracy A. Holotuk has been named senior vice-president, corporate development, at Electronic Manufacturing Group Inc. She comes to EMG from the Canadian operations of Shandwick International, in Toronto, where she served as a vice-president for both Shandwick and Continental Technologies. She has also held senior positions with sgi (Silicon Graphics) and Hewlett-Packard.
The University of Calgary’s department of medicine has searched the globe and attracted new converts to the joys of the Stampede City, including:
* Dr. Susan Barr, assistant professor of medicine, who was previously a visiting scientist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore where she studied the epidemiology of systemic lupus.
* Dr. Derek Exner, an assistant professor in the departments of medicine and community health sciences. He is a cardiac electrophysiologist and clinical trialist who has done post-doctoral training at the Universities of Western Ontario and Calgary, as well as Johns Hopkins University.
* Dr. Benedikt Hallgrimsson, associate professor in the department of cell biology and anatomy. He hails from the department of anatomy at the University of Puerto Rico where he was an assistant professor.
* Dr. Penny Hawe, who joins the community health department as a professor. Hawe — previously a senior lecturer in the department of public health and community medicine at at the University of Sydney — is also the new appointment to the Markin Chair in Health Promotion.
* Dr. Frank Jirik has been appointed as a professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology. He has moved here from the rheumatology division of the department of medicine at the University of British Columbia.
* Dr. Ann Kirby, a new clinical associate professor in medicine. Dr. Kirby, who holds a master’s degree from Harvard University, was an associate professor at the University of Western Ontario department of medicine, and medical director of the intensive care unit at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.
* Dr. Marcy Mintz joins the department of medicine as a clinical assistant professor. Mintz is working on a master’s degree in medical education at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
* Dr. Marc Poulin, a new assistant professor in the department of physiology and biophysics. He recently completed a post-doctoral fellowship in physiological sciences at Oxford University.
* Dr. Raylene Reimer, an assistant professor in biochemistry and molecular biology. Reimer, who holds a joint appointment in the Faculty of Kinesiology, recently completed post-doctoral training at the Nestle Research Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland, where her research focused on regulation by nutrients of the expression of genes involved in diabetes and obesity.
* Dr. Alan Shiell has been appointed to the community health department as associate professor. Shiell also hails from the University of Sydney where he was a was a senior lecturer in the Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation.
* Dr. Pierre-Yves von der Weid has joined the department of physiology and biophysics as an assistant professor. He was formerly a senior assistant with the University of Geneva’s department of zoology and animal biology.
* Dr. Patrick Whelan, an assistant professor in the physiology and biophysics department. Whelan recently completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in the National Institutes of Health, Bethseda, Md.
