A new kind of grasshopper is coming to the aid of drought-plagued farmers in Saskatchewan.

Calgary-based Big Rock Brewery has announced plans to donate $2 for each 12-pack case of Grasshopper Wheat Ale brand beer to a trust fund set up to help needy farmers in that province.

The “Grasshopper Gives Back” campaign will run until Oct. 10, at which time a cash donation will be made to the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) Feed Connection Trust Fund on behalf of the company.

Big Rock founder and CEO Ed McNally, formerly a farmer and rancher in southern Alberta, says he understands the devastation the farmers are experiencing as dry conditions ruin their crops and grasslands.

The company says it hopes its gesture will be matched by other breweries doing business in Saskatchewan.

Dow Agro-Sciences Canada, Inc. has committed $20,000 to help producers affected by drought.

Funds donated to the trust will be used to offset the costs of transporting feed into drought areas of the province, as well as transporting livestock into areas with surplus feed.
