Never before has well-site and pipeline contamination been the hot-button issue it is today. According to industry estimates, more than 70,000 contaminated sites are in urgent need of reclamation across Western Canada.

In response to this demand, hydrocarbon remediation companies have been springing up like wildflowers. But far too many seem prepared to make promises they can't keep.

"Some of our competitors' clean-up projects have dragged on for years, with the clients asked to fill in a blank cheque," said Tyler Heathcote, CEO of Bio-Synergy Resources Inc., a truly special Alberta remediation company.

"We do business differently," Mr. Heathcote continued.

"We'll tell you exactly how long it will take to clean your contaminated site and we'll give you a precise cost estimate."

Bio-Synergy CEO Tyler Heathcote, left, and president James Baker live up to the estimates they give clients.

And then Bio-Synergy Resources Inc. will live up to the letter of the deal.

The promise isn't offered casually. It's cast in stone – an iron-clad guarantee.

This 100-per-cent performance-bond guarantee is unique within the industry.

"In all our joint-venture projects, we offer this guarantee," chimed in Bio-Synergy Resources president James Baker, MBA, P.Eng.

"We contract to live up to the terms of a preliminary bio-treatability study done on the site," Mr. Baker added.

"This tells us the level of hydrocarbon contamination we may be dealing with on any given site, as well as the severity of the contamination, projected expense of the cleanup, the type of soil, and so on," he said.

With this guarantee, Bio-Synergy Resources pledges to eliminate a client's liability by completely eradicating the contamination.

Mr. Heathcote and Mr. Baker believe a remediation job isn't done properly when a clean-up crew merely transfers a site's contaminated soil to the site of the nearest landfill.

Why not? Let the CEO explain.

"It's very simple," Mr. Heathcote began. "Simply removing the soil does not remove the stain of an oil company's liability. On the contrary, a client retains liability when contaminated earth is moved to another locale. Corporate liability travels along with it.

"Nor do we do our R&D on the customer's time . . . or add the costs to his invoice," Mr. Heathcote said.

Bio-Synergy Resources Inc. can confidently offer this remarkable guarantee, and establish these matchlessly high-performance standards, for a number of reasons.

First, the company is justly proud of an incomparable track record of successfully completed clean-up projects throughout Western Canada.

"I can't begin to tell you how many times we've succeeded where other cleanup teams have failed," Mr. Heathcote said.

"Recently, we were invited to assess a site that three other remediation companies had tried and failed to clean. After examining the problem, we told the client we could do the job in eight months."

In fact, the experts surprised themselves. The soil was returned to a pristine state within 90 days.

In addition, because the company's overhead expenses are kept to a minimum, expert professionals from Bio-Synergy Resources can be at your site promptly, no matter where it's located. That's because Bio-Synergy's service teams remain on constant call throughout the West, from Hay River to Lloydminster, from Red Deer to Calgary, and beyond.

The second reason is a unique joint-venture agreement Bio-Synergy has signed with a Quebec-based R&D company, a recognized industry leader in the use of indigenous micro-organisms that hungrily consume hydrocarbon spillage in all its forms.

Depending on logistics, the cleanup may be expedited onsite, or at a pre-arranged central site.

But one thing Bio-Synergy Resources refuses to apply is a cosmetic solution.

"Environmental legislation is in place and we work with our clients to meet the standard," said Mr. Heathcote.

"Our job is not to cover up the problem, or pick up the problem and take it somewhere else. Our job is to remove the pollution – period."

The company's management team is understandably excited about Bio-Synergy's recent run of top performance.

Senior decision-makers are also buzzed by a soon-to-be-finalized corporate merger with a sister company.

Details of the merger will be announced shortly, with plans for a public share offering to follow in the coming months.
