\Canada’s largest intellectual property law firm has set up shop in Edmonton to be closer to its Alberta clients.

Smart & Biggar opened its Edmonton office this week, citing a booming and highly diversified Alberta economy.

“When Smart & Biggar was looking to expand its national presence, Alberta was the logical place to go,” said Mike Manson, head of the firm’s Vancouver office.

“A number of our clients are based in Alberta. Over the course of time, we have seen the technology community in the province grow dramatically, and we have been fortunate to work hand-in-hand with many of Alberta’s tech companies.”

Added company chairman David Morrow: “There is tremendous opportunity for business in Alberta. We believe many innovative organizations in the region can benefit from our understanding of sophisticated intellectual property issues as well as our unparalleled depth and breadth of technical experience.”

Heading up the Edmonton office will be Terry Kuharchuk and Helen Garwasiuk, both Albertans who have established intellectual property practices. Both lawyers have been registered trademark agents since 1991.

Smart & Biggar, which practises exclusively in intellectual property law, has offices in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Edmonton.
