SMART Technologies has bolstered its board of directors with three appointments. Grant Billing, John Phillips and Leonard Ruggins join Dave Martin, chairman and CEO of SMART, and Nancy Knowlton, president and COO.
Billing is the executive chairman for Superior Propane Inc. of Calgary, and is responsible for strategic development and executive leadership. He also serves as the executive chairman of Founders Energy Ltd., based in Calgary.
Phillips is the executive vice-president, carrier relations and general counsel for TELUS Mobility. Prior to TELUS Corp’s. acquisition of Clearnet Communications Inc. in October 2000, he held the same position with Clearnet.
Ruggins is VP, finance and treasury with Bell Canada in Montreal. He is responsible for all capital market activities, cash management, banking, risk management and insurance for Bell Canada, BCE Inc. and certain subsidiaries. He has held various positions in the pension fund, treasury and finance departments within Bell Canada and BCE Inc. since 1970.
SMART is a private company employing more than 300 people in Calgary. Best known for its SMART interactive whiteboards, it provides “roomware” solutions such as whiteboards, multimedia cabinets and software that facilitate meeting, teaching and training. It was named Canada’s 2000 Exporter of the year.
Dr. Michael Maher has been appointed chairman of the board of directors for Pelorus Navigation Systems Inc.
Maher, previously deputy chairman, replaces Edward Fitzhenry the company’s co-founder and chairman who retired from the board Feb. 15.
The move was part of a succession plan developed by the board, said Calgary-based Pelorus. Fitzhenry remains available to the board and senior management as a special adviser. He had been chairman of the board since the company’s inception in 1981.
Maher was appointed to the Pelorus board in 2000. He is a professor of strategy and general management at the University of Calgary, where he was dean of the faculty of management for 18 years.
At the same time, David Caul has been appointed as interim chief financial officer of Pelorus.
A senior financial executive with more than 25 years of experience, Caul has served a variety of companies as CFO and as a management consultant and contract executive in senior management positions.
He replaces Geoff Bennett, who resigns effective March 2, to pursue other opportunities.
Pelorus (PN–CDNX) is a global provider of conventional and next-generation navigation systems and equipment to enable safe and reliable aircraft landings.
Dr. Eldon Smith, a professor at the University of Calgary medical school, has been appointed to the board of Pheromone Sciences Corp.
A leading clinician and research scientist, Smith was formerly the dean of the faculty of medicine and previously head of the department of medicine and head of the division of cardiology.
Pheromone (PHS–CDNX) is a biotechnology and medical diagnostics device research and development company that focuses on commercializing technologies in the field of human reproduction and sexuality. The company said the appointment, which is subject to regulatory approval, is part of a program to enhance the independent nature of the board.
Netscout Capital Corp. (NSC–CDNX) has announced the resignation of Gregory Matthews as a director and officer of the company.
Matthews is presently subject to a creditor proposal. CDNX has a policy, which provides, in effect, that persons who are subject to a current creditor proposal may not serve as a director or officer of a corporation listed on CDNX.
Matthews continues as an employee of Netscout as a special projects manager.
