Canada and Mexico have signed an agreement to co-operate on a wide range of energy matters. T

The deal signed last week identifies 11 possible areas of co-operation, including energy markets, regulation, energy efficiency, new and renewable energy, and research and development.

“It is very important for the Government of Canada to work with our counterparts in Mexico to create the environment where Canadians and Mexicans can co-operate in supporting the sustainable development of energy resources and pursuing alternative forms of energy,” said federal Natural Resources Canada Minister Herb Dhaliwal, who signed the agreement with Ernesto Martens, Secretary of Energy for Mexico.

A working group known as the Mexico-Canada Energy Bilateral Technical Mechanism will meet annually to discuss a work plan for various co-operation activities.

The memorandum will remain in effect for five years. Mexico is Canada’s largest trading partner in Latin America and Canada’s fourth-largest export market.
