The Calgary Chamber of Commerce has hired a new hand for the helm with the appointment of Murray Sigler as president and chief executive officer.

A native Calgarian, Sigler is currently chief executive at the Winnipeg Airport Authority. He will take up his new administrative role in Calgary on April 1.

“I am looking forward to returning to Calgary and the many challenges that lie ahead,” said Sigler. “The Calgary chamber is among the most vibrant and effective in the country and I am pleased to be a part of it.”

A graduate of the Harvard University Grade School of Business in the Advanced Management program, Sigler has also practiced law privately for several years, and acted as corporate counsel for the former Pacific Western Airlines. He led PWA in a variety of key senior executive positions, including president and COO of Canadian Airlines International and CEO of Canadian Regional Airlines.

In 1993, he established Altius Corporation, an independent management consulting firm based in Calgary providing specialized support services to the transportation industry.

Nancy Schlesinger has won the competition for a five-year term appointment as vice-chair of the Alberta Labour Relations Board.

She assumed her new duties Jan. 23.

Schlesinger, who was admitted to the Bar in 1995, has provided legal counsel to the ALRB since 1999. Prior to that she worked as legal counsel at the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Ken Campbell

URS Norecol Dames & Moore Inc. has appointed Ken Campbell as manager of its Alberta operations.

Campbell has more than 30 years of experience in environmental and resource consulting and has worked extensively with industrial clients in Western Canada, the U.S. and around the world.

His work has involved providing senior technical, safety and management guidance for environmental and resource development projects.

Kurt Hansen

Campbell is a former director of international operations for Northern Environmental Technologies Inc.

The company has also appointed Kurt Hansen as senior environmental engineer for its Calgary office. Hansen has more than 27 years of consulting experience in air quality, emission control and waste management with clients in industry, government and institutional organizations.

Calgary-based Southward Energy Ltd. is making changes to its management team. Dave Elgie has been appointed vice-president of engineering and chief operating officer.

Elgie brings more than 20 years of experience in the oil and gas sector and was most recently vice-president of business development and acquisitions with Canadian Hunter Exploration Ltd.

Barry Herring, who was recently named vice-president of finance and chief financial officer, also has two decades of oilpatch experience under his belt. Previously, he held senior finance positions at UMC Resources and Ocean Energy and most recently was senior vice-president of Calpine Canada.

Southward Energy Ltd. (SWN-TSE) is a junior oil and gas exploration and production company operating in Western Canada.

NTG Clarity Networks Inc. of Calgary has brought Magdy Makhlouf on board as its new senior vice-president of sales for Western Canada.

Makhlouf will focus on growing NTG Clarity’s revenue in the West. He brings to the company an extensive background in engineering, operations, sales and marketing.

Prior to joining NTG Clarity, Makhlouf held several senior positions including executive director at DMR for the western region, vice-president of engineering and operations at Telus Advanced Communication and president of Rockwave Technology.
