It’s not just executive offices that are getting new nameplates in this fluid economy. Even the office buildings have fresh bolt-on monitors.
The high-rise at 715 5th Ave. S.W. — which previouly carried the name Serval and, before that, Norcen — has just been dubbed the Compaq Canada Corporation. The company’s logo appears on all four sides of the building.
Compaq’s new 50,000 sq. ft. of office space will accommodate more than 325 employees, centralizing the company’s sales, service and helpdesk personnel at one address. Compaq Canada moved into two floors of the building in July 1996, and now occupies more than four floors.
“Western Canada is an extremely important market for Compaq Canada, and it is imperative for us to have a strong presence in Calgary,” says David Booth, president and managing director of Compaq Canada Corp.
Compaq Canada, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston, offers computer hardware, software, solutions and services. Compaq Canada has 3,000 employees in 41 offices across Canada.
TELUS has appointed two new vice-presidents. Robert G. McFarlane becomes executive vice-president and chief financial officer. Barry A. Baptie is executive vice-president, technology and operations.
McFarlane was executive vice-president, CFO and secretary-treasurer of Clearnet Communications before the company was acquired by TELUS. He will also serve as CFO for TELUS Mobility until an appointment is made.
Baptie’s most recent position at TELUS was executive vice-president finance and CFO.
IDenticam Systems Canada Ltd. has appointed Leslie Cummings as its systems integrator for Alberta. The Markham Ont.-based company — a distributor and supplier of equipment and accessories to the smart-card and photo-identification markets — has also opened a new office in Calgary at #300, 400 5th Ave. SW.
Cummings was initially a customer service representative with the firm, then moved up to become inside sales team leader.
BW Technologies Ltd. has added two people to its executive suite. Industrial designer Barry Moore is the new vice-president of product development, while Kevin Meyers becomes the new vice-president of operations.
Moore, owner of Big Toolbox Design Ltd., which has been acquired by BW, has helped BW launch more than 15 new gas-detection products in the past five years. He has won a national Silver Design Effectiveness Award.
Meyers was previously plant manager with SPM/Dynacast, a component manufacturer supplying Nortel.
Roger Jackman takes this week’s award for the longest title.
He has joined Cisco Systems Canada Co. as the new enterprise major account manager for software sales in Western Canada. His focus will be on the growing call-centre industry in this part of the country. Jackman was previously vice-president of marketing and sales for Customized Interactive Voice and Data Services Inc.
Geocan Energy Inc. has added Andrew Fisher to its management team.
Fisher, the company’s new manager of contracts and negotiations, was previously employed with Pacalta Resources Ltd. as vice-president of international contracts and negotiations.
Geocan president Wayne Wadley said Fisher’s energy industry experience in North America and abroad is well suited to Geocan’s portfolio of domestic and international assets.
James M. Hill has been appointed chief financial officer of Cell-Loc Ltd. Prior to joining Cell-Loc, he was CFO at DALSA, a company based in Markham, Ont. that designs, develops and manufactures high-performance image sensors and electronic cameras. He has also held senior positions with Revolve Technologies, Fracmaster, Nowsco, KPMG and Price Waterhouse.
Calgary-based Cell-Loc, which has made the news recently because of its shaky share prices on the TSE, sells wireless-location products that allow for the location of any wireless device.
Watertowne Bottling Co. Ltd. of Airdrie has appointed three new board members in preparation for expansion into the rest of Canada and the U.S.
Watertowne president and CEO Roy Lewis has added Lou MacEachern, Leslie Gower and Jim Jensen to the board.
Calgarian MacEachern is sole owner of Fortune Industries Ltd., a business management consulting firm which holds the majority shares in the Servpro/Dalco Group of companies, a cleaning, salvage, construction and real estate group. He is also a director of Hurricane Hydrocarbons Ltd., Resolution Energy Ltd., Eagle Plains Resources Ltd. and Hoodoo Hydrocarbons Ltd.
MacEachern is also involved in the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, the Calgary Foundation, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Salvation Army and Rotary International in Calgary.
Gower is the regional developer for Ontario with Watertowne, and is president of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce.
Jensen, of Edson, Alta.is president of R.J. Jensen & Associates Ltd., which provides consulting, financial and management services. Jensen is a director of Alberta Opportunity Corp. and Eleven Engineering Inc. of Edmonton.
Watertowne, a privately held bottled-water company that sells franchises, is planning to market its product and others via the Web, then deliver all items to your door.
Denyce D. Lundeen has been appointed a director of Zorin Exploration Ltd. Lundeen will also be the company’s chief financial officer. Lundeen, who has a math degree and a Certified General Accountant designation, is president of Gas & Oil Accounting (1988) Ltd. She also co-founded DGL Software Services Ltd., a petroleum software developer and provider.
As well, Lundeen is on the board of trustees of The Calgary Zoological Society and is the society’s secretary-treasurer and chairperson of its finance and legal committee.
She is also a member of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Production Accountant’s revenue committee and the Alberta government’s energy business design committee.
David A. Fleming is the new vice-president of business development for Bow Valley Energy Ltd.
Calgary-based Bow Valley is an international oil and gas acquisition, development, exploration and production company.
It has offshore and onshore interests in the United Kingdom, has signed a service contract to develop the Balal oilfield in the Persian Gulf near Iran and has been awarded three exploration blocks in France.
BlackRock Ventures Inc. of Calgary has announced that vice-president John Festival will assume the president’s chair Dec. 31.
Bruce Burton will step down as president, but remain on the board of directors.
Alan Winter, board chairman of zed.i solutions, has announced that Trevor M. Apperley will be the company’s new president and chief executive officer. Prior to joining zed.i, Apperley was vice-president of corporate development for CanWest Global Communications. From 1992 to 1999, he was vice-president of business development for Telus Corp.
Twelve-year-old zed.i solutions develops and markets remote sensing and monitoring instruments to the oil and gas industry, but plans to sell specialty engineered products to other industries by January. It operates from five North American locations, including its Calgary and Houston headquarters.
