Robert Ritchie will continue as chief executive of Canada's second-largest railway while new president Fred Green, who has been with CPR for the past 27 years, will also retain his title as chief operating officer.
The move reflects succession planning, a company spokesman said.
Ritchie, who is not planning to retire, had held the joint titles of president and chief executive since 1995.

Liquidation World (TSX:LQW) has named a new senior VP of merchandising.
Maurice Chelli brings more than 25 years of specialty, discount and general merchandise experience. He was most recently the senior general merchandise manager with Home Outfitters.
In another company appointment, Derrick Gillespie has been promoted to VP of global sourcing.
Liquidation World, whose home office is in Calgary, liquidates consumer merchandise through 106 outlets across North America, and also provides store-closure sales management.
Resin Systems Inc. (TSXV:RS, OTCBB:RSSYF), a composite material products technology company operating through its RS Technologies division, has appointed Scott Terhune as senior VP of production.
Terhune has more than 20 years of experience in a variety of operational roles in the engineered composite products manufacturing industry.
Resin Systems is based in Alberta.
Newmex Minerals Inc. (TSXV:NMM) has appointed Gary Guidry as CEO and president, Gary Hyde as COO and Shirley Farr as corporate secretary.
Guidry, a director of Newmex, replaces Jim Bright who has resigned as president and corporate secretary for personal reasons but will continue as a director. Hyde brings more than 20 years of experience to the company.
Farr has assisted Newmex in the past in its corporate secretarial functions.
Newmex is engaged in the exploration for and acquisition of mineral properties. Its corporate office is in Calgary.
Sylogist Ltd. (TSXV:SYZ) has made some changes to its senior management team.
Thando Moyo has assumed the role of VP and chief technology architect. Moyo joined Sylogist in April.
Bob Mailloux, a certified SAP professional, has joined Sylogist as director of systems infrastructure.
Allan Heinrich has been promoted to director of integration solutions. Allan has been with Sylogist for several years, most recently as a manager of product development.
Simon Batcup has resigned his position as managing director for an opportunity in the transportation industry.
Calgary-based Sylogist (TSXV:SYZ) delivers information management and technology software solutions and services to clients.
Kootenay Energy Inc. has named David Baldwin to the position of VP of exploration.
With more than 30 years of experience primarily within the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, he has worked as a geological consultant since 1989.
Kootenay is an emerging junior oil and natural gas company based in Calgary.
Precision Drilling Corp. has confirmed that upon the effective date of conversion to the proposed income trust structure, Gene Stahl will be appointed to the position of COO and president of Precision; Doug Strong will be appointed CFO; and Darren Ruhr will be appointed VP of corporate services and corporate secretary.
Stahl has been employed with Precision for the past nine years, most recently as VP of rentals. Strong has been the group controller for Precision's Canadian drilling business for the past eight years.
Ruhr has been employed with Precision for the past eight years, most recently as director of information technology, real estate and travel.
