Former oilpatch boss David Tuer has quelled some of the buzz about his sudden departure from PanCanadian Petroleum with the announcement he has joined the Calgary Health Region.

Officials with the Calgary health unit announced last week that Tuer, who stunned the Alberta oilpatch by abruptly resigning as president and CEO last month after six years with the company, has been appointed chairman.

Tuer was among of series of provincial appointments to the health department. A former assistant deputy minister with Alberta Energy, Tuer replaces health board chairman Jim Dinning, a former Alberta treasurer who resigned this summer.

In related news, former provincial auditor general Peter Valentine has been appointed as an adviser to the health region as well to as the University of Calgary.

Valentine will work to strengthen ties between the two organizations and work on a number of projects designed to improve front-line health services and develop a joint Academic Health Centre in Calgary. He will work with physician leaders and senior management in both organizations.

As auditor general of Alberta from 1995 to 2001, Valentine oversaw public sector clients such as the Legislative Assembly, the Alberta government, universities, colleges, and regional health authorities. Prior to that, he had a 37-year career with KPMG.
