The 10th annual Emerald Awards recognizing environmental excellence have given the nod to a number of Alberta initiatives.
The awards were presented last week at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music in Edmonton by the Edmonton-based Alberta Foundation for Environmental Excellence to recognize outstanding environmental initiatives and leadership in Alberta.
Winners were named in the following categories:
* Not for Profit Organization: Alberta Dairy Council’s milk container recycling program.
* Corporate Institutional Leadership: Dr. Luigi Morgantini, Weyerhaeuser Company Ltd.
* Community Group: Wagner Natural Area Society.
* Large Business: Rimbey Gas Plant Clean Air Initiative.
* Small Business: Vision Quest Windelectric Inc. – Ride the Wind!
* Individual Commitment: Gordon Howell, The Solar Servant, Edmonton; and Kristen and Steven Tannas, Cremona Ecological Diversity of Plant and Animal Communities.
* Education: Sandy Cross Conservation Foundation, Calgary.
* Government Institutions: Town of Okotoks’ Sustainable Okotoks – Leaving a Legacy.
* Research and Innovation: Dr. Harrie Vredenburg, University of Calgary, Greening Business Curricula: Integrating Sustainability Into The Core.
* Board of Governors Climate Change Award: City of Calgary Carbon Dioxide Emissions Abatement Action Plan (implementation phase).
Nominations for Emerald Awards are accepted year-round. All applications are judged by an independent panel of expert judges. The next announcement of award recipients will occur at the 12th Annual Emerald Awards to be held in June 2003 in Calgary.
