Jim Popowich is the new president of Fording Canadian Coal Trust.
Popowich has spent 35 years with Fording and its predecessor companies, most recently as executive VP. He is also president and CEO of Elk Valley Coal Partnership.
As well, Mark Gow has been appointed controller of the Fording coal trust. Gow has held a variety of senior roles during his seven years at the company, most recently as director of investor relations. He is also controller of Fording Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Fording coal trust, and Elk Valley.
Based in Calgary, Fording is an open-ended mutual fund trust.
The Elk Valley Coal Partnership has made changes to its executive ranks.
Bill Fleming has been appointed vice-president, projects. Fleming previously spent 16 years with Teck Cominco Ltd., most recently as general manager, coal.
As well, Jim Jones has been appointed vice-president of employee relations and corporate secretary. A lawyer with experience in labour relations in the mining industry, Jones spent more than 17 years with predecessors of Fording Canadian Coal Trust and Elk Valley.
Calgary-based Elk Valley is the world’s second-largest exporter of metallurgical coal. The company is owned by a partnership between Fording (FDG.UN-TSX; FDG-NYSE) and Teck Cominco.
University Technologies International Inc. has appointed Paul Cataford as its new president and chief executive.
Cataford comes to UTI from HorizonOne Asset Management, a Toronto-based private equity boutique he co-founded in 2001.
UTI is a technology commercialization company owned by the University of Calgary.
Patch Safety Services Ltd. of Calgary has named Bob Copeland as its new chief operating officer.
Copeland has more than 25 years of diversified oilfield service experience, most recently as VP of business development for Integrated Production Services Ltd.
Calgary-based Patch (PSS-TSXV) provides oilfield safety services from six service centres in Western Canada.
William van Yzerloo has been appointed chief financial officer of Calgary-based Inter Pipeline Fund (IPL.UN-TSX). He replaces Robert Fotheringham, who has resigned to pursue other opportunities.
Van Yzerloo has been the company’s vice-president of corporate development since joining the firm last August. Previously, he held senior roles in the energy industry, including the post of CFO of Aquila Energy Corp.
Inter Pipeline is one of Canada’s largest petroleum transportation businesses.
Rod Allan has been named chief financial officer of Petro Field Industries Inc.
Allan brings more than 20 years of accounting experience, including seven in the oil and gas services sector.
Calgary-based Petro Field (PF-TSXV) is a manufacturer and reseller of oilfield production equipment.
ViRexx Medical Corp. (VIR-TSXV) has made some appointments.
Dr. Irwin Griffith is the new vice-president, drug development, and Howard Appel was named investor relations consultant.
Griffith has more than 15 years of expertise in the development and commercialization of immunotherapies for cancer, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. He founded Rational BioDevelopment Inc. in 2003.
Appel is a seasoned investor relations professional who will advise ViRexx on partnership strategies and possible technology acquisitions, and carry out general corporate duties in Europe.
ViRexx is an Edmonton-based biotech company that is developing therapeutic products for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B, hepatitis C and selected tumours.
