After years of butting heads with officials, environmentalists and social activists in Romania, Alan Hill has retired as CEO of Gabriel Resources Ltd. (TSX:GBU). Gabriel, struggling to proceed with its gold project in Transylvania, said that Hill will remain a director and a consultant to the company. Keith Hulley, a member of the board since 2006, was named interim CEO until a permanent successor to Hill is found. The gold project has been entangled in an environmental impact assessment since 2007 after a series of political, bureaucratic and legal setbacks. Gabriel's head office is in Toronto.

Torstar Corp. (TSX:TS.B), the publisher of the Toronto Star and other papers, is replacing its CEO, slashing its dividend and warning of further restructuring and job cuts after its recent $211.2-million quarterly loss. President and CEO Robert Prichard will step down as CEO at the company's annual meeting in early May. Further executive shuffling at the Toronto media company has former Star publisher John Honderich returning in an active role as chairman of the company. He replaces Frank Iacobucci, the former Supreme Court of Canada judge who has been Torstar chairman since 2005.

Corby Distilleries Ltd. (TSX:CDL.A, CDL.B) says its president and CEO, Con Constandis, will leave the company July 1 to become chairman and CEO of Pernod Ricard China. Pernod Ricard S.A. indirectly owns more than 50 percent of Corby's voting common shares. Corby's portfolio includes a number of Canadian and international liquor brands. He was also a board member and CEO of Second Cup GP Inc., a subsidiary of the fund. Second Cup is headquartered in Mississauga.
