A Calgary businessman who contributed untold hours in building the city’s high-tech sector has been honored for his early efforts.

The Alastair Ross Technology Centre was officially opened last Thursday in University Research Park. The state-of-the-art, 120,000-sq.-ft. complex, operated by Calgary Technology Inc., provides support for Calgary’s rapidly growing new-economy companies.

Ross is the former board chair of the Calgary Research & Development Authority, predecessor of the CTI founded in 1981.

“Alastair Ross is the founder, the father, the friend and the visionary of CR&DA from Day One, who contributed thousands of volunteer hours in building Calgary’s high-tech sector,” said John Masters, president and CEO, Calgary Technologies Inc.

Ross, former director (1981-98) and chair (1981-96) of the Calgary Research & Development Authority, is currently president and director of Allaro Resources Ltd.; and a director of Petrorep S.A., Canadex Resources Ltd., P. Burns Resources Ltd., Calgary Airport Authority and Devonian Properties Inc.

He obtained his civil engineering degree at the University of Alberta and an MBA from Harvard University.

He is a former member of the Economic Council of Canada, the National Science and Engineering Research Council and the National Advisory Committee on Petroleum. He was a director of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (1985-90).

CTI is a joint partnership of the City of Calgary, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and the University of Calgary, which works with the city’s e-commerce and advanced technology communities in developing and expanding their operations.
