Companies from around the province joined medical researchers and scientists at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary on Friday as winners of this year’s Alberta Science and Technology Leadership (ASTech) Awards, which honour achievement and leadership.
More than 1,000 people gathered at Calgary’s TELUS Convention Centre to celebrate the winners.
The winners included:
* Al-Pac/ASTech Innovation in Integrated Landscape Management Prize: Dr. Stan Boutin, U of A (industrial and environmental integration).
* Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Science Award: Dr. John L. Wallace, U of C (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
* Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Technology Award: Dr. Terry Allen, U of A (pharmaceutical biotechnology for cancer treatment).
* Outstanding Commercial Achievement in Alberta Science and Technology Award (to corporations having gross sales less than $25 million per annum): BioWare Corp., Edmonton (develops computer games and animation).
* Outstanding Commercial Achievement in Alberta Science and Technology Award (to corporations having gross sales greater than $25 million per annum): CSI Wireless, Calgary (designs and markets global positioning systems).
* Leaders of Tomorrow Award: Dr. Jocelyn Grozic, U of C (gassy soils research);
* Outstanding Contribution to the Alberta Science and Technology Community Award: Dr. William Cochrane, Calgary (distinguished medical/research career).
* ASTech Foundation Special Award: Dr. Robert J. Crawford, U of A (work on behalf of Alberta science and technology community).
* NRC/ASTech Innovation in Industrial Research Prize (North of Red Deer): Russell N.D.E. Systems Inc., Edmonton (non-destructive pipeline defect detection).
* NRC/ASTech Innovation in Industrial Research Prize (South of Red Deer): Alterna Technologies Group Inc. (streamlined e-finance).
* Syncrude/ASTech Innovation in Oil Sands Research Prize: Dr. Donald E. Sheeran, consultant (contribution to oil sands extraction technology).
* AVAC/ASTech Innovation in Agricultural Science Prize: Dr. James H. Helm, Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development (NIRS technology applications).
* Excellence in Science and Technology Journalism Prize: Specialized Publications: Tony Kryzanowski, contributing editor, Logging and Sawmilling Journal.
* Excellence in Science and Technology Public Awareness Prize: Operation Minerva (encouraging more Alberta women into careers in science and technology).
