03/28/02 Mitchell gets SAIT chair Business Edge Moving On: corporate appointments and changes

Douglas Mitchell has been designated chair of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) board of governors effective June 1.

Mitchell replaces Russ Wells, who is resigning from the post after two full terms.

Mitchell, who practices corporate and commercial real estate law in Calgary, has served as the SAIT board’s vice-chair since June 2001. He also serves as chairman of the Alberta Economic Development Authority.

Edmonton-based biotechnology firm Biomira Inc. has named physician Guy Ely to the position of vice-president of clinical and regulatory affairs.

Ely was previously responsible for global clinical development and medical affairs of oncology products at Lorus Therapeutics Inc. and before that was associate medical director of SmithKline Beecham Canada Inc.

Imaging Dynamics Company Ltd. has made some changes at the top following an overhaul of its business plan.

Michael Baker has resigned as president and CEO of the Calgary-based company (IDL-CDNX). He’ll be replaced by Darryl Stein, vice-president of sales and marketing.

Prior to joining IDC, Stein was founder and president of the largest, privately owned Ricoh office products distribution firm in Canada.

IDL develops and manufactures high-resolution digital radiography systems for diagnostic imaging.

Walter Gray has joined the Calgary office of The Osborne Group.

Gray, who joins the company as a principal, has extensive experience in information technology and project management – most recently with the Saudi Industrial Development Fund in Riyadh. He also held a senior role with North College in Timmins, Ont., operated a consulting firm in Vancouver and was dean of engineering technology at Red River Community College in Winnipeg. The Osborne Group is a national team of contract executives.

Edmonton business leader Jim Edwards has been named chairman of his old alma matter – the University of Alberta. Edwards was appointed to chair the board of governors last week.

Until his resignation earlier this year, Edwards was president and CEO of Economic Development Edmonton. He held a number of roles prior to that including two terms as a Member of Parliament for Edmonton South.

Edwards replaces Eric Newell, who is stepping down after four years as board chair.
