The largest single construction project in 25 years has opened at Calgary International Airport.
The $160-million Concourse D addition, part of a three-year, multi-phase expansion to the north end of the original airport terminal, began welcoming passengers this week.
The renovated area includes 11 aircraft loading bridges, 23 airline check-in and ticketing positions and 300,000 square feet of additional public and operational space. That includes nine new post-security food and beverage outlets and 11 new retail concessions.
The airport’s seven-level parking garage has 1,000 new stalls linking motorists to Concourse D’s airline check-in and ticketing lobby. The area is used by Calgary-based WestJet Airlines and a handful of other carriers.
“This much needed addition to the terminal will facilitate the continued growth of West Jet and other airlines that require check-in, ticketing and aircraft parking positions,” said Garth Atkinson, president and CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority.
“The expanded Concourse D and other current projects will permit the airport to keep pace with Calgary's growing transportation needs.”
Calgary’s airport is Canada’s fourth busiest, with 8.3 million passengers in 2001.
