Calgary-based SemBioSys Genetics Inc. has been granted a United States patent for the use of its oil body-based plant expression technology.
The biotechnology company announced last week that the new patent governs production of somatotropin in the human, bovine or fish forms.
Somatotropin is a protein hormone which plays a key role in several complex physiologic processes such as growth and metabolism.
“This patent represents further validation of the utility and flexibility of our technology platform,” company president and CEO Andrew Baum said in a statement.
“The new patent further demonstrates the extremely strong position we have developed around our oilbody technology platform for a wide range of products and applications,” said Baum.
SemBioSys is a plant bio-technology company that develops value-added products to the pharmaceutical, personal care and nutritional industries. Founded in 1994, the company has a staff of 54 at its plant in northeast Calgary.
Last year, SemBioSys landed a U.S. patent for its oilbody technology in personal care and topical pharmaceutical products. The patent covers any emulsion formulation containing purified oilbodies.
SemBioSys has also patented its genetic engineering technology to attach proteins to oilbodies, allowing the creation of a natural emulsion system for both topical and oral applications.
