Kevin Nugent is the new vice-president of finance and chief financial officer of Nisku, Alta.-based NQL Drilling Tools Inc. (NQL.A-TSX).

Nugent, who begins his new position Sept. 1, most recently was vice-president of a private equity firm specializing in North American oilfield service. Prior to that, he was VP of finance and CFO of Enserco Energy Service.

Elizabeth Denham has been appointed team leader for the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), which is poised to become law this fall.

Denham, who will share an office in Calgary with the provincial auditor general, has extensive experience with information and privacy issues in the public and private sectors. She is president of Denham & Associates. She will head up a team that will work with the private sector to achieve compliance with the legislation.

Neil Lamoureux has been named to the new position of chief technology officer for Edmonton-based CodeBaby Corporation. Lamoureux has been with the privately-owned software developers since its inception in 2000.

Calgary-based Iradesso Communications has bolstered its ranks.

The investor relations company has hired veteran journalist Vicki Barnett as an investor relations associate.

Barnett was previously director of media and public relations for Parallel Strategies. She has also worked for publications including Business Edge, the Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal and the Windsor Star.

Eryn Rizzoli has also joined Iradesso to manage corporate communications. She will oversee client services and providing creative direction. Most recently, Rizzoli was publicity intern at the second largest university in Denmark.

Byron Dudley is joining Winalta Inc. as vice-president and chief financial officer. Dudley, a chartered accountant, was previously a senior executive with a leading financial firm. Winalta (WTA.A-TSXV) is an Edmonton-based manufacturer of homes, industrial projects and laminated insulation products.

Lloyd McEwen has been appointed vice-president of seismic acquisition for Calgary-based Norex Exploration Services (NRX-TSXV).

Prior to joining Norex as operations manager in 1994, McEwen was owner and operator of McEwen Exploration Services.

Norex has also appointed Ron Schmid as manager of seismic processing. Schmid has two decades of experience in geophysical processing, interpretation, research and development.

Norex provides 2D and 3D seismic data acquisition and processing services to the upstream Canadian resource industry.

Mark Fischer has stepped down as executive vice- president and chief operating officer of Tesco Corporation. Fischer joined the Calgary-based firm in April 1999 and relocated from Calgary to Houston in August 2000.

He will be replaced on an interim basis by president and CEO Robert Tessari.

Alberta’s Science and Technology Leadership Foundation (ASTech) has named former provincial MLA and cabinet minister Fred Stewart as its first executive director.

Stewart is president of Fred Stewart & Associates Inc., which offers consulting services to the advanced technologies sector.

Stewart was an MLA from 1986 to 1993, serving as minister of technology, research and telecommunications as well as government house leader. He also chairs several organizations including the Inno-Centre of Alberta and the Netera Alliance. Prior to that, he practised commercial and corporate law for nearly 20 years.

Founded in 1989, the ASTech Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that promotes and celebrates outstanding achievements in science and technology.

Pangaea Systems Inc. has appointed Peter Brown as managing director of its Calgary office. Brown, who joined the company late last year as a delivery director, has two decades of experience in the Calgary IT market.

Pangaea is an e-business solution provider with operations across western Canada and the United States.
