The Government of Canada will invest $72,000 in Edmonton’s O2 Canada Water Inc. through the Aboriginal Business Canada program.

This investment will help O2 Canada Water Inc. with the research and field testing of its SEAIR oxygenator. The product has demonstrated preliminary success in raising the levels of dissolved oxygen in aquaculture ponds.

Maintaining adequate levels of dissolved oxygen is essential for sustaining a pond’s biomass, thus increasing fish yields as well as reducing disease and viruses.

“I am pleased that Industry Canada, through the Aboriginal Business Canada program, has supported the research, development and commercialization of innovative technology that will be very important to this growing sector,” said Anne McLellan, Member of Parliament for Edmonton West, in making the announcement.

“This type of research and development is key to our economic performance and prosperity.”

Industry Canada’s Aboriginal Business Canada program promotes the growth of aboriginal businesses by providing services, information and support to clients in all sectors of the economy. Services and assistance are available to Canadian status and non-status Indians on or off-reserve, Inuit and Métis people.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 budget and is therefore built into the existing financial framework. O2 Canada Water is majority-owned by Warde Thomas, O2’s president and director of research and development.
