Brian MacNeill has been appointed to the University of Calgary’s board of governors and will become chair of the board on July 1.
MacNeill is the chairman of Petro-Canada and retired as CEO of Enbridge Inc. at the beginning of this year. He is also a director of numerous major corporations including the Toronto Dominion Bank and Dofasco Inc.
In addition to his business commitments, MacNeill has been a prominent member of the community. He is a director, former campaign chair and chair of the United Way of Calgary and a board member at Mount Royal College.
Earlier this year, he received the Distinguished Business Leader award presented by the university’s Faculty of Management and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. The announcement was made by university president Dr. Terry White, who lauded MacNeill, saying: “In addition to his outstanding leadership qualities, he has a comprehensive understanding of higher education in Alberta and a deep appreciation for research in a university context.”
John MacNeil has been appointed to the board of directors of Circa Enterprises Inc.
MacNeil is a partner in the securities group of the Calgary law firm Bennett Jones and is a member of the firm’s corporate/commercial department. He was formerly senior counsel in the office of the general counsel at the Ontario Securities Commission.
Circa Enterprises (CTO-TSE) specializes in providing surge protection, HDSL enclosures and related equipment to the North American telecommunications industry. The company is based in Calgary with manufacturing facilities here and in Hudson, Fla.
Russ Wells is the new president of Moveitonline Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Mullen Transportation Inc.
Wells was previously senior vice-president and chief information officer of TransCanada PipeLines, where he oversaw the information technology department and developed e-business solutions. He was also a founder of NRG Information Services, a company focused on e-business solutions for the energy business. Wells is also chair of the board of governors at SAIT.
Moveitonline Inc. is building e-business applications for small and medium shippers and carriers using the latest Internet-based technologies.
Mullen Transportation (MTL–TSE), based in Aldersyde, is a supplier of trucking and logistics services with a fleet of more than 1,200 trucks and 2,500 trailers.
Calgary lawyer John Carpay is the new Alberta director and spokesman for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
Carpay took the post this week, replacing Mitch Gray, who left the provincial director’s job in November 2000.
Carpay earned his law degree at the University of Calgary, has served as a special assistant to a federal cabinet minister and writes a legal column for Report Newsmagazine.
The tax federation is a national group fighting for accountability in government. n n n Mike Harrison has been appointed CEO and president of Home Media Corp. as part of a new corporate strategy announced by the company. Sam Fisher, named CFO at the end of 2000, will also serve on the company’s leadership team. Over the past five years, Home Media (HM-CDNX) has built a business as a Web and content developer. Now, says the company, it will also target new customers in small and medium-sized businesses by providing software development, Internet products and services.
Mark Blumes has left Patchgear.com, giving up his position as chairman and chief executive officer of the company. He will continue on as a director of Patchgear. In the meantime, Terri Fisher will continue as chief technology officer and assume the responsibility of chief operating officer. Brian Kohlhammer continues as vice-president, finance and chief financial officer.
Patchgear.com (PG-CDNX) provides vertical marketplace solutions that aid relationships between manufacturers, existing distribution channels and customers.
John Zaozirny has been named a director of Canadian merchant bank Middlefield Bancorp Ltd.
Zaozirny is counsel to Calgary law firm McCarthy Tetrault and sits on the boards of several companies, including Pengrowth Corp. and IPSCO Inc.
Zaozirny is a former Alberta MLA and was provincial energy minister in the mid-1980s. Roger Garland of Toronto joins him on the board of directors for Middlefield.
