“We replaced their 400-watt lamps with our 125-watt compact fluorescent lamps,” says Peter Pellatt, vice-president of PowerSave Engineering. “In the process, we saved them 75 per cent on power consumption and the savings will pay back the Royal Glenora Club’s costs in less than one year.

Another advantage is the fact that compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) operate at very low temperatures (you can touch them while they’re on) compared to the old high-intensity discharge (HID) lights that hit about 400° C, thereby increasing the load on cooling systems. The CFLs need no cooling-off or heating-up period, so the club can turn off the lights to save power whenever it chooses.

Owners of West Edmonton Mall have also officially endorsed PowerSave’s technologies and are in the process of planning a project to replace 3,300 lights in the mall parkade.

“West Edmonton Mall has saved between 20 and 25 per cent on electrical consumption within the areas treated by using our technologies,” says Pellatt. “The cost saving for the parkade lighting would be in excess of 60 per cent with a payback period of less than one year.”
