When it comes to electrical energy conservation and quality lighting solutions, PowerSave Engineering Inc. is truly in the Olympian class.
This is an Edmonton company that is rapidly earning a reputation for lighting up businesses while reducing their operating costs. Even Olympic figure skaters are raving about PowerSave Engineering’s sensational lighting solutions.
PowerSave recently revamped the lighting at the skating rink at Edmonton’s Royal Glenora Club, the training site of some of the world’s top figure skaters, including Jamie Sale and David Pelletier.
Sale, Pelletier and others are thrilled with the new full-spectrum lighting, while the Royal Glenora Club wins Olympic-sized savings on its power bill.

“We replaced their 400-watt lamps with our 125-watt compact fluorescent lamps,” says Peter Pellatt, vice-president of PowerSave Engineering. “In the process, we saved them 75 per cent on power consumption and the savings will pay back the Royal Glenora Club’s costs in less than one year.
Another advantage is the fact that compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) operate at very low temperatures (you can touch them while they’re on) compared to the old high-intensity discharge (HID) lights that hit about 400° C, thereby increasing the load on cooling systems. The CFLs need no cooling-off or heating-up period, so the club can turn off the lights to save power whenever it chooses.
Owners of West Edmonton Mall have also officially endorsed PowerSave’s technologies and are in the process of planning a project to replace 3,300 lights in the mall parkade.
“West Edmonton Mall has saved between 20 and 25 per cent on electrical consumption within the areas treated by using our technologies,” says Pellatt. “The cost saving for the parkade lighting would be in excess of 60 per cent with a payback period of less than one year.”
Primary clients of PowerSave Engineering are larger electrical power consumers in the commercial, industrial, institutional and government sectors, such as industrial warehouses, big-box retail outlets and shopping malls with HID lighting and offices with inefficient T-12 fluorescent lighting.
Clients of PowerSave Engineering are finding cost savings on power consumption can have a major impact on their bottom lines.
“In speaking to clients, what we’ve learned is that in today’s economy it’s an awful lot easier to improve the bottom line by reducing your operating costs, such as electricity costs, than by increasing your revenues,” says Pellatt, who has a PhD in business administration.
Pellatt and his partners, president Alf Comeau, a professional electrical engineer, and VP Brian Semeniuk, a power engineer, pride themselves in applying their knowledge and experience to identify ways in which clients may reduce their power consumption and demand charges without risk to the integrity of the operation and without changing the working environment to the detriment of the workforce.
After providing a sophisticated assessment, PowerSave Engineering will recommend improvements to a client’s electrical system that have attractive immediate and long-term financial benefits.
In addition to providing commercial quality CFLs and LED lights, PowerSave Engineering is an authorized affiliate of Energy Automation Systems Inc., an American company that boasts a line of solid-state products designed to reduce the amount of power utilized while maintaining the power going to each of the loads.
PowerSave Engineering also enhances its service capabilities through a number of corporate strategic alliances. For example, the company works with Custom Lighting Ltd., an Alberta-based company that designs and manufactures commercial and institutional lighting fixtures and reflectors, matched to PowerSave Engineering’s light sources, to deliver the maximum light in a manner and direction required by a specific application, thus further increasing the cost savings and environmental improvements for clients.
“We provide clients with a significant advantage by looking at their electrical energy consumption from a system point of view to see where we can make effective improvements,” says Pellatt. “Then we quantify exactly what we can do to save them kilowatt hours of consumption and provide a specific proposal that identifies the savings available.”
PowerSave Engineering then offers its own unique guarantee of projected financial savings. If a client purchases the recommended electrical conservation program and meets all client responsibilities, PowerSave Engineering will deposit an amount equal to 25 percent of the purchase price with the client’s solicitor as security for guaranteed savings.
“Basically, the guarantee is that they will get back 100 per cent of their capital investment by saving X per cent, depending on the proposal, in their power bill per year, which will recover their capital investment in no more than a specified number of months.”
What makes PowerSave Engineering extraordinary in its field is that its electrical solutions save clients money while making a positive contribution to the environment.
“It’s unique when a company can achieve environmental benefits when there’s also a tremendous economic benefit,” says Pellatt, whose company provides clients with certificates verifying the environmental contributions of its program.
Another bonus to working with PowerSave Engineering is that many of their clients qualify for federal government grants of up to 25 per cent on the capital cost of the conservation program.
With PowerSave Engineering, you get reduced power bills and a healthier environment. Now, there’s a Olympian one-two punch that’s tough to beat in any arena.
