The Alberta government has named lawyer Bill Rice to head the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC).
Rice, previously the managing partner at law firm Bennett Jones, becomes the ASC's chairman and chief executive officer. He takes over from interim chairman Peter Valentine, who was appointed while the search for a permanent chair continued.
The ASC is Canada's second-largest securities regulator behind the Ontario Securities Commission.
Global Railway Industries Ltd. (GBI:TSX) has appointed Darren Zatwarnitski as Global's VP of finance.
Zatwarnitski, a chartered accountant, was previously Global's corporate controller since September of 2004.
Calgary-based Global (TSX: GBI) is a diversified rail-product company serving the railway industry in North America.
The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) has made a number of senior executive appointments.
Dale McMaster becomes president and chief executive officer, while David Erickson becomes senior VP and chief financial officer.
McMaster served most recently as the chief operations officer of AESO.
Erickson previously served as CFO with AESO since 2003.
AESO leads the planning and operation of Alberta's interconnected power system.
Provident Energy Trust (TSX:PVE.UN; AMEX:PVX) is placing Dan O'Byrne in the newly created position of executive vice-president of operations. O'Byrne will also be the company's chief operating officer.
Currently Byrne holds the position of vice-president of technical services at Nexen Inc. He joins Provident on July 18.
Provident is a Calgary-based, open-ended energy trust that owns and manages oil and gas production businesses and a midstream services business.
Thunder Energy Inc. has a new president and CEO. Stuart Keck replaces Doug Dafoe, who assumes the position of non-executive chairman of the board.
Keck comes from a 41/2-year tenure with Centrica Canada Ltd./Direct Energy Marketing Ltd., where he held various senior management positions.

Triangle Petroleum Corp. (OTCBB:TPLM) has made a managerial appointment.
Ron Hietala is the first president of Triangle's new wholly owned Alberta subsidiary, Elmworth Energy Corp., which is the operating company that will carry out all oil and gas exploration and development activities for Triangle. Hietala comes from Canadian Hunter Exploration Ltd.
Calgary-based Triangle is a natural gas exploration company developing a resource play in the Deep Basin area of Western Canada.
