0SAIT is offering its help to Calgary students left stranded after the Information Technologies Institute (ITI ) shut its downtown campus last week.
SAIT officials said they have approached provincial education authorities and Ernst & Young Inc. — ITI’s court-appointed receiver — to see if stranded students can continue their education at SAIT.
ITI put itself into receivership in mid-August and closed several schools across Canada, leaving about 70 Calgary students without the ability to finish nine-month courses in a variety of Web, desktop and networking applications. Most students had three weeks of classes left.
Ernst & Young spokesman Mathew Harris said in a news release that representatives met late last week with students at all Canadian locations and advised them of their options.
The Calgary, Mississauga, Ottawa and Moncton ITI schools are closing immediately due to a lack of funds, but Harris said receivers hope to “keep communication lines with students open, to provide as much assistance as possible.”
He said stranded students will have the opportunity to finish their courses at another Canadian ITI location.
Ernst & Young will initiate negotiations with an unnamed potential purchaser next week, said Harris, who noted that several companies have inquired about buying ITI.
