The president and CEO of SemBioSys Genetics Inc., a Calgary-based biotechnology company, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). In addition to this appointment, Andrew Baum also is chairman of the board of BioAlberta and a member the board of BIOTECanada.

BIO represents more than 1,000 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centres and related organizations in 34 nations. BIO members are involved in the research and development of health-care, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products.
In other company news, SemBioSys scientific founder and chief scientific officer Maurice Moloney has been appointed to a three-year term on the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
Moloney has been involved with NSERC since 1987, serving on the strategic grant selection and research partnership policy committees.
He holds the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in plant biotechnology at the University of Calgary, where he is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. NSERC is a federal agency supporting basic university research through research grants, and project research through partnerships among universities, governments and the private sector.
Denis Taschuk has resigned from his position as chief financial officer of Cytovax Biotechnologies Inc. (CXB-TSX) effective immediately to pursue other interests. Cytovax says it is evaluating its personnel needs while its finance team undertakes the position’s responsibilities.
Cytovax is a biotechnology company which develops new approaches to combating infectious disease.
Soheil Asgarpour has resigned as executive vice-president and chief operating officer of Canadian 88 Energy Corp. to pursue other opportunities.
The change follows last month’s appointment of Stephen B. Soules to the post of senior vice-president, finance and CFO.
Canadian 88 (EEE-TSX, ASX) is an independent oil and gas company with its head office in Calgary.
Joe Hospodarec has joined Parallel Strategies as director of creative services.
Hospodarec was previously creative director at Brown Communications in Calgary and Ignite Communications in Vancouver.
Parallel Strategies is a marketing communications company with offices in Calgary, Vancouver and Whitehorse.
Shirley Philips is the new president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta (JASA). She has been senior vice-president and COO for the past three years. JASA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to partnering the business community with the education system to prepare youth for the workforce.
The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) has elected the president and chief operating officer of Syncrude Canada Ltd. as MAC chair.
Jim Carter replaces Guy Dufresne of Quebec Cartier Mining, who has completed his term as chair.
Based in Ottawa, MAC is the national organization for the Canadian mining industry. Its members are engaged in mineral exploration, mining, smelting, refining and semi-fabrication.
Lindsay Fikowski has joined the Western Canadian practice of Right Management Consultants, Inc. in the role of marketplace resource consultant. She is based in the Calgary office.
Prior to joining Right, Fikowski was an associate/executive recruiter with The Caldwell Partners International.
