Calgary-based Shell Canada Ltd. has made the largest corporate contribution ever to Alberta’s United Way fund-raising campaign – donating more than $1.5 million.

Contributions to this year’s Shell Employee United Way campaign were up 13 per cent from last year, in part due to staff participation in 21 United Way Days of Caring awareness projects, organizers said.

More than 250 staff volunteered 1,100 hours of help to a number of local community agencies, giving employees a first-hand look at how United Way donations help Calgarians in need.

Half the company’s total donation came from employee and retiree contributions; Shell matched the funds with an equal donation and also kicked in an additional $17,000.

“The tragic events of Sept.11 reinforced the importance of caring for others at home and far away,” said Rob Symonds, Shell’s 2001 campaign chairman.

“Shell people have responded by digging deeper into their pockets and increasing their individual donations so that United Way can help those in need here at home.”

Added Shell president and CEO Tim Faithfull: “Once again, Shell people have put their words into action, giving their time and money to help their neighbours.”

This year’s United Way of Calgary and area campaign aims to raise $27.5 million.
