Toronto and Montreal stock market operator TSX Group Inc. (TSX:X) has named Kevan Cowan president of its TSX Markets division and the group head of its equities business. The TSX said Cowan will remain president of TSX Venture Exchange and will report to TSX Group CEO Thomas Kloet.

Donald Guloien, a 28-year employee of Manulife Financial Corp. (TSX:MFC) who has been the life insurance company's chief investment officer, has been selected to succeed Dominic D'Alessandro as president and CEO. The transition will be effective May 7, 2009, after Manulife's annual meeting. The company also announced that John DesPrez, currently senior executive VP, will become COO in addition to his duties as president and CEO of John Hancock Financial Services, Manulife's U.S. subsidiary.

Paul Raboud is the new president and CEO of Bird Construction Co. Ltd., succeeding Paul Charette. He was previously president and COO, and has been with Bird for 24 years in a variety of positions, said a Bird Construction Income Fund (TSX:BDT.UN) release. Charette is retiring as president and CEO, but remains chair of the income fund trustees and the company board. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the fund and is the fund's administrator. The fund has named Tim Talbott, P.Eng., as senior VP of operations and Jim Brennan, P.Eng., as senior VP of the company. Talbott has been a member of the Bird organization for more than 25 years. Brennan joined Bird Construction in 2008 through the acquisition of Atlantic-based Rideau Construction. Bird Construction is a general contractor with offices across Canada. Its head office is in Toronto.

Peter Breese has resigned as CEO, but remains an adviser. Gil Playford will carry the roles of chairman and CEO. GBS is a junior gold producer active in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Robert Astley will become next chair of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in October. He succeeds Gail Cook-Bennett, the CPPIB's founding chair since 1998, whose term expires in October.
Astley was appointed as a director for the CPP Investment Board in September 2006. He was formerly president of Sun Life Financial Canada, and president and CEO of Clarica Insurance Co.
The CPP Investment Board invests the funds not needed by the Canada Pension Plan to pay current benefits. It has its head office in Toronto and offices in London and Hong Kong.
