Jim Carter plans to retire April 30 as Syncrude Canada Ltd.'s president and chief operating officer, positions he has served in since October 1997. Carter joined Syncrude in its first full year of operation in 1979.
Syncrude said Carter's replacement will be announced at a later date.
Fort McMurray-based Syncrude Canada operates the Syncrude project, a joint venture of seven energy companies.
Matrikon (TSX:MTK) says its founder, Nizar Somji, has returned to Matrikon's management team as interim chief financial officer. Nizar was chief executive officer until December 2005, at which time he retired to become board chairman.
In conjunction with this appointment, Somji has stepped down as chairman but will remain a director.
Hugh Bolton, who resumes the role of chairman, says Somji will serve as interim CFO "until a suitable candidate can be found and groomed for the position."
Previous CFO Tariq Malik has left the Edmonton company to pursue other opportunities.

Shiningbank Energy Income Fund (TSX:SHN.UN) has made three corporate promotions: J. Lance Petersen has been named VP of land; controller Alan Glessing will add VP of administration to his duties; and Daniel Williams has been named VP of acquisitions and divestments.
Petersen joined Shiningbank in the fall of 2006. He replaces Terry Prokopy, who is retiring to take on a part-time role as senior adviser to Shiningbank. Glessing and Williams have been with Shiningbank since 2000.
Based in Calgary, Shiningbank is a natural gas-focused energy trust founded in 1996.
Desmarais Energy Corp. (TSXV:DES) says Wayne Singular is resigning as controller and CFO effective Feb. 28. At that time, James Long will assume the CFO duties in tandem with his role as president and CEO.
Desmarais is a Calgary-based independent junior natural gas and oil producer.

Rowswell takes over from Tom Lloyd, who has resigned due to other business commitments but will continue in an advisory role to the company.
