How would you like to step out of your downtown Calgary office at 5 p.m. and tee up your Titleist on a picturesque layout just minutes later?

Oh, you think it’s impossible?

Well, then let us introduce you to the hidden jewel of Calgary golf courses.

The historic Calgary Elks Lodge & Golf Club is a peaceful oasis just a few minutes from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

World-renowned golf course architect Les Furber’s redesign of The Elks in 1992 helped establish it as an extremely beautiful, yet challenging, course.

Yet, because this 18-hole championship course at 2502 - 6th St. N.E. is hidden from major roads, it has remained one of the city's best-kept secrets to many Calgarians.

Membership in the Elks, one of Calgary’s finest golf and social clubs, offers multiple benefits beyond its close proximity to downtown and accessibility from all corners of the city. Membership options include full golf and club privileges, spousal, intermediate and junior golf privileges, and lodge membership.

And the club currently features a short waiting list.

Members receive membership in the RCGA and AGA for men and the CLGA and ALGA for women, full, unrestricted (number of rounds) use of the course, putting greens, driving range and bunker practice areas, and a computerized handicap system recognized by the RCGA, ALGA, AGA, and ALGA.

‘A’ and ‘B’ members are offered benefits such as club storage, men’s, ladies’ and mixed club leagues, interclub tournaments and reciprocal agreements with other facilities and businesses.

The golf course has been entertaining Calgarians for 80 years. It opened for play in 1923 as the Regal and became known as the Elks in 1967 when it was purchased by Elks Lodge #4.

It is the only golf course operated by the Elks in Canada and is a non-profit organization registered with the province of Alberta.

World-renowned course designer Les Furber completed a redesign of the course in 1992 that enhanced the beauty and challenge of the course.

The meticulously groomed layout features mature, towering 50-foot trees, water hazards and many well-placed sand and grass bunkers to keep you honest.

The course plays between 5,376 and 6,810 yards from four sets of tees.

“It never ceases to be a challenge,” notes Elks Club general manager Howard Cuffe.

“I can tell you that no members have been complaining about constantly shooting under par.”

Unlike most other courses, the Elks clubhouse is open year-round for the convenience of members, with daily food service in the dining room and members’ lounge.

Other features of the clubhouse include two large-screen TVs for sports buffs, meeting and banquet rooms seating 10 to 180 people, full locker facilities with showers and a men's steam room, an exercise room, billiards room and dining room with a seasonal patio overlooking the course.

Golf-related opportunities include a full-service pro shop, lessons and numerous tournaments.

The Elks offers competitive membership rates. The initiation fee for ‘A’ members is $12,500 and annual fees are $2,050 with spousal fees of $1,420 and $330 for juniors.

The ‘A’ member is required to join the Calgary Elks Lodge #4. This category of membership is limited to 475 members, and just two spots are currently available.

Members on the waiting list receive full clubhouse and charging privileges, 42-hour advance tee-time booking for weekdays and after 3 p.m. on weekends.

Once admitted from the waiting list, the ‘A’ member enjoys five-day advance tee-time booking and first priority for weekend and holiday tee-time draws.

The Elks also prides itself in specializing in running public and corporate tournaments on Thursdays with its experienced staff.

The semi-private course offers $60 green fees (including GST) and special twilight green-fee packages of $70 per couple, including power cart and a $10 clubhouse voucher.
