John Herring has resigned as president and chief executive of Calgary-based Wireless Matrix Corporation.

Herring, who spent three years with the company, will pursue other opportunities, the company said last week. Herring quit the board of directors last fall after the company admitted it failed to disclose during a public offering that Herring had sold shares of the company as part of a divorce settlement Herring will be replaced on an interim basis by vice- president Al Milligan and CFO Mark Weder.

Wireless Matrix (WRX-TSX) is a developer and provider of wireless data services for operations involving mobile workforces and remote assets.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA) has appointed Jane Halford to director of practice review. Halford will lead quality assurance for the Edmonton-based institute, overseeing all policy and administrative aspects of practice review. Previously, she was senior manager at Grant Thornton LLP, Edmonton.

The institute is a professional body of 8,700 chartered accountants (CAs) and CA students.

Richard Peters has joined the law firm of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP as associate counsel. Peters, who specializes in securities law and mergers and acquisitions, was most recently in-house counsel with a major pipeline company.

Fasken Martineau is a Canadian business law and litigation firm with more than 560 lawyers nationwide. The company opened its Calgary office last year.

Pangaea Systems has named Jason McIntyre to the position of marketing director.

McIntyre, the Calgary-based company's marketing manager since October 2002, has more than eight years of corporate and marketing management experience.

Pangaea is a privately held e-business service provider.

Matthew Janisch is the new vice-president of finance and CFO of Bow Valley Energy Ltd.

Janisch has nearly 20 years of experience in banking, corporate finance, capital markets and oil and gas research. Most recently, he was managing director of oil and gas equity research at a major Canadian bank He is the third addition to Bow Valley's senior management team in recent months. Tom Ruissen joined the company as vice-president of exploration in September and Nick Fairbrother came on board as director of business development for U.K. operations in November.

Bow Valley (BVX-TSX) is a Calgary-based oil and natural gas exploration, development and production company with operations in Western Canada and the U.K. sector of the North Sea.

Joanne O'Connell is the new Alberta chapter president of the Professional Marketing Research Society (PMRS). O'Connell heads up O'Connell Enterprises in Calgary.

Also appointed to the board were past-president Brian Singh (Cameron Strategy); education chair Lois Epp (Epp Consulting); membership chair Christine Pickup (Consilium Research); publicity rep Stasi Manser (Market Visions); and members-at-large Marc Tremblay (Insight Research and Consulting) and Agnes Dallison (Canadian Outcomes Institute).

Founded in 1960, PMRS is a non-profit organization for marketing research professionals engaged in marketing, advertising, social and political research.

Dave Bigioni has been appointed senior planner for Calgary-based Venture Communications Ltd. Bigioni will be responsible for strategic brand and marketing planning and accountability. He joins Venture after an eight-year career at Unilever, where he managed relationships with key accounts including Wal-Mart Canada.

He will be based in Toronto but also work out of Venture's Ottawa office.

Venture is an independent marketing communications firm that operates wholly owned branch offices in Edmonton and Ottawa.
