Dr. Harvey Weingarten has been named the University of Calgary’s next president, officially taking over duties Sept. 1.
He succeeds Dr. Terry White, who has served as president since 1996 and is stepping down July 31.
Weingarten, a distinguished scholar and researcher in the fields of psychology and medicine, serves as McMaster University’s provost and vice-president, academic. He becomes the U of C’s seventh president.
“After learning about the U of C and the city, the decision to come to Calgary became easy,” said Weingarten. “There is a sense of adventure, optimism and commitment to excellence that is remarkably engaging and infectious.”
A Montreal native, Weingarten holds degrees from McGill University and Yale University.
After joining McMaster University in 1979, he went on to become Chair of McMaster’s Department of Psychology in 1989, full professor in 1990 and dean of that university’s faculty of science in 1995. One year later, he assumed his current postings.
Marlene Graham is the new chair of the Alberta Research Council Board. Graham is the MLA for Calgary-Lougheed, and was elected to a second term during the provincial election in March. Prior to her election in 1997, she had practised law for more than 20 years.
The research council develops and commercializes technologies for its customers. It performs applied research and development on a contract or fee basis, and shares venture opportunities with others to develop new technologies.
Stephen Barley has joined the board of directors at NetDriven Solutions Inc. Barley has nearly 20 years of experience in securities and corporate finance law.
NetDriven Solutions (NDS–TSE) provides seismic data storage management and fully managed scalable storage services.
Dr. John Frey has resigned his job as VP, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs at SYNSORB Biotech Inc. The company said Frey has left to pursue other opportunities and that Dr. David Cox would oversee the position, pending review. SYNSORB (SYB–TSE, SYBB–NASDAQ) is a pharmaceutical company developing and manufacturing carbohydrate-based therapies.
John Poetker has joined the board of directors at Redwood Energy Ltd. Poetker fills the vacancy left by the resignation of Christen Dempster, effective April 1. Poetker has been a partner in the law firm Borden Ladner Gervais LLP since 1988. Redwood Energy (RWD–CDNX) is a junior oil and gas company.
Dell Chapman has joined Cancoil Integrated Services Inc. as its VP, Finance and Chief Financial Officer.
Chapman, a chartered accountant and chartered financial analyst, most recently was president, finance and CFO of Stellarton Energy Corporation.
Cancoil (CAN–CDNX) and its U.S. subsidiary, Technicoil Integrated Services Inc., supply drilling and service operations to the North American oil and gas industry.
Barbara Richardson has resigned from the board of directors of Cell-Loc Inc. Richardson, who joined the board in 1999, is one of the founders of Springbank Tech Ventures. Cell-Loc said she resigned because of new job responsibilities. Cell-Loc (CLQ–TSE) develops and markets wireless location products.
