Ron McIntosh has been appointed as president and CEO of Ventus Energy Ltd. following a review of strategic alternatives and the terminated merger of the company.
McIntosh has more than 35 years of industry experience, including as vice-president international and exploration at Petro-Canada, and senior vice-president and COO of Gulf Canada. He has extensive exploration experience in the Western Canada sedimentary basin, as well as other Canadian and international frontiers. McIntosh will also be joining the board of directors at Ventus.
John Tapics has been appointed as Balancing Pool chief executive officer and administrator by the Power Pool Council of Alberta, effective Oct. 15.
Tapics brings 25 years of experience in the energy industry, including 11 as an officer of TransAlta Corporation in charge of the generation and transmission and distribution business units.
The Balancing Pool was established in 1999 through the Electric Utilities Act to manage, on behalf of Alberta consumers, the financial accounts arising from the transition to a deregulated electric industry and assume ongoing responsibilities related to sold and unsold Power Purchase Arrangements (PPAs).

George Campbell has left one of the top chairs at Welwyn Energy Ltd. The director, COO and CFO of the Calgary-based oil and gas firm has retired, and Senai Kozak has been appointed as his replacement. Kozak has been providing consulting services to Welwyn for the past few years.
The chief financial officer of Calgary-based zed.i solutions has resigned to pursue other opportunities. Ric Charron was working on a contract basis with the company, which specializes in digital wireless services to the natural gas industry, to complete the firm’s IPO.
Cal-Can International, Ltd. has appointed Paul C. Woo as president and CEO, and Sandy Chow Lam as executive vice-president for corporate development.
Woo joined Cal-Can from a Texas grocery wholesaler where he was the chairman of the board. Lam joined Cal-Can from a Calgary trading company where she was the president.

Westminster Resources Ltd. has announced the appointments of Jim Broughton as vice-president engineering/operations and Ron Hozjan as chief financial officer and VP finance.
Broughton is a professional engineer with more than 17 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry in Western Canada. Prior to joining Westminster, Broughton was the VP engineering at a junior oil and gas company.
Hozjan has a CMA designation and more than 14 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry. Most recently he was CFO and VP finance at an oil and gas service company.
Westminster is a Canadian company engaged in exploration, development and production of natural gas and oil in Canada and the United States.
Wmode has appointed Charles (Chuck) Napier as senior vice-president of United States operations. Napier brings more than 15 years of telecommunications experience to Wmode.
Prior to joining Wmode, Napier was a product manager at Amazon.com. Napier, who will work out of Wmode’s Seattle office, holds an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
Wmode, the creator of ClearMode, is a privately held developer of wireless infrastructure services for mobile commerce and is headquartered in Calgary.
