Guy Kerr has been named president and CEO of the board of directors of the Workers’ Compensation Board – Alberta.

Kerr was picked from more than 150 applicants for the position.

In addition to his extensive knowledge of WCB operations, Kerr brings 11 years of senior management experience to this appointment. Prior to joining the WCB, he was the president and CEO of Payment Systems Corporation, an IBM subsidiary.

The Workers’ Compensation Board is a not-for-profit mutual insurance corporation funded by employers. It
provides workplace liability insurance to 1.3 million workers and 101,000 employers.

Dr. Laura Shanner of Edmonton is among six new members appointed to Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee (CBAC) for a three-year period.

Shanner specializes in bioethics, genetics and
reproductive medicine, and is presently seconded from her position as associate professor of public health at the University of Alberta to the John Dosseter Health Ethics Centre (also at the U of A).

The CBAC is a committee of independent experts created to advise Ottawa on broad policy issues associated with the ethical, social, regulatory, economic, scientific, environmental and health aspects of biotechnology. Members of the committee serve primarily in a volunteer capacity.

Sheldon Reid has taken over the reins of Cell-Loc as president and CEO.

Reid, formerly executive vice-president corporate and business development, succeeds Michel Fattouche, the co-founder of Cell-Loc. Fattouche will remain with Cell-Loc as chief technology officer.

Calgary-based Cell-Loc Inc. (CLQ-TSX) develops, markets and supports its patented wireless location technology in Asia as well as North and South America.

Canadian 88 Energy Corp. has hired an industry veteran as its chief operating officer and senior vice-president.

Blake Fleming, mostly recently vice-president of the Hunter North Business Unit at Canadian Hunter Exploration, has more than 23 years of experience in the Canadian upstream oil and gas industry. He replaces Soheil Asgarpour, who resigned last month.

Mike Curtis has been appointed manager of the Alberta Research Council’s environmental technology business unit.

Curtis joined the council in 1987 and has been part of the management team for more than a decade.

He will work with industry and government to develop and commercialize technologies and provide science-based information and assessments relating to long-term environmental sustainability.

Joshua Leon has been named to head the electrical and computer engineering department of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Calgary.

Leon, who joined the faculty two years ago from Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, is an acclaimed scholar in biomedical engineering, specializing in the cardiac field.

Web development and Internet consulting firm Critical Mass has a new vice-president, client services.

Art Graddon brings more than 20 years of experience in integrated communications planning and management.

Graddon comes to Critical Mass from Indicia Direct Strategies, his own consulting firm specializing in direct
marketing and brand communications planning.

D’Arcy Levesque is the new chair of the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD).

Levesque, a senior public affairs professional and dedicated Alberta arts supporter, has extensive experience in both the public and private sector. He has served on numerous boards including the Edmonton Business Council for Visual Arts, the Edmonton Art Gallery and the Calgary Opera.

Levesque replaces Patrick Cashion, who served as board chair since 1997.

Robert Hodgins has been appointed CFO of Pengrowth Corporation, effective Aug. 6.

Hodgins joins Pengrowth with more than 25 years of
experience with senior Canadian corporations, most recently in the position of VP and treasurer of Canadian Pacific Limited.

Gordon Anderson, interim chief financial officer, will remain an officer of Pengrowth Corporation while devoting more attention to his position as VP of PML Financial Services.
