Klaus Zahnd is the new chief executive officer of Calgary-based Western Warrior Resources Inc. Zahnd has many years of international corporate finance and fund-raising experience in the mining exploration sector.

Biomira Inc. has promoted Ronald Helmhold to the post of vice-president, treasury and financial operations.

Helmhold joined the Edmonton-based company (BRA-TSX, BIOM-Nasdaq) in 1996 as the corporate controller. Since then, he has taken on increasing responsibilities, most recently as senior director of finance.

Chris Sheard has been named the second public member on the governing council of the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET).

He joins Elaine McCoy as a public representative on the council, which currently includes 10 elected volunteers plus the society’s national representative.

Sheard has more than 25 years of experience in the
natural gas and electricity industries. He is a former
president of ATCO Gas and Northwestern Utilities Limited, and held several senior executive positions in other companies in the electricity and water utility businesses.

Sheard is currently president of Fairman Holt Inc., an energy-industry consulting firm. He is also chairman of the board of Economic Development Edmonton.

ASET is a non-profit organization that issues professional credentials to applied science, information and engineering technicians and technologists in Alberta and the territories.

Bill Heidt has resigned as president and chief operating officer of Three Sisters Mountain Village.

His position will be filled on an interim basis by co-CEOs Blair Richardson and Les Skingle. A search is under way for a replacement.

Three Sisters is an Alberta-based resort, residential and commercial development company.

Calgary Technologies Inc. has added two senior staff positions.

Rob Beamish has been appointed vice-president of CTI from his previous position as managing director of CTI’s Technology Commercialization and Incubation Program. He will oversee several CTI programs and services.

Prior to joining CTI in 2000, Beamish managed IT groups and a large national project for a gas pipeline firm.

Bill McKenzie, meanwhile, has been named director, finance, and will oversee financial management, planning and reporting responsibilities for CTI.

McKenzie is principal of his own consulting firm, MacKenCo Consulting.

Calgary Technologies Inc. is the economic development agency for Calgary’s advanced technology sector.

Paul Smolarchuk has been named manager of business development and planning for the energy division of the Alberta Research Council (ARC).

He will work with energy business units in Calgary, Edmonton and Devon to develop and implement plans for long-term growth.

Smolarchuk has more than 25 years of experience in the Canadian petroleum industry. Prior to joining the Edmonton-based research council, he was general manager of GTI E&P Service Canada Inc., a division of the U.S.-based Gas Technology Institute.
