Residents of Alberta’s two largest cities can now fly direct to Whitehorse on Air North – the Yukon’s largest inter-territorial carrier.

The Whitehorse-based airline last week launched its new thrice-weekly service to Edmonton and Calgary from the Yukon capital. Flights will run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays aboard a 108-seat Boeing 737 aircraft.

“The new service will be of great benefit to (Alberta) residents and businesses because it will provide them with a direct link with the Yukon, which will facilitate business and leisure travel,” said Air North president and CEO Joe Sparling.

Yukon Premier Pat Duncan also praised the new route, noting it will encourage more Albertans to holiday, do business or visit family in the northern territory.

A one-way ticket between both Calgary and Edmonton and Whitehorse costs $195 plus fees and taxes, while a round-trip costs $390 from both cities.

The new routes are a byproduct of the Yukon Air Access Study – a 12-month project that identified potential for improved air service and business opportunities between the communities.

As well, a new website has been established at www.goyukon.com to encourage Alberta and B.C. residents to visit gold-rush country. Based in Whitehorse, Air North has been flying for 25 years and is the Yukon’s largest inter-territorial carrier.
