In 2006, Jason Kruger and Wes Montgomery formed a partnership to play on the world beach volleyball circuit, with the clear objective of gaining sufficient standing over the next few years to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
After enjoying many individual successes over the years, and climbing back up after narrow losses with different partners, Wes and Jason decided that
their easygoing natures and complementary styles would be a formidable team – and they were right. They have had immediate success and finished the 2006 season strong.
They are demonstrating to the sponsorship community that they have what it takes to compete effectively in the international beach volleyball circuit and
proudly represent Canada on the world stage – a long-standing dream of both men.
Wes and Jason realized after playing on the world tour that – in order to become a top team and reach their ultimate goal of qualifying, competing and representing Canada at the Olympic Games – they weren’t able to keep working in the off-season and training part time. They needed to commit 100 per cent and put all their focus, time and energy into their dream. This meant raising sufficient funds to enable them to train abroad in beach volleyball hotspots like Brazil and California.
With 19 stops on the world tour, travel, accommodation and basic living costs become a heavy burden. Proper support allows them to focus entirely on volleyball and not sacrifice basic living necessities prior to and during Olympic qualifying events.
The pair of aspiring Olympians have similar athletic backgrounds, succeeding in a variety of sports throughout their younger years. After being recruited out of high school in multiple sports, Wes found himself representing the University of Calgary Dinos for his university career. He was honoured with numerous athletic awards and was captain of the men’s team for three years.
After university, his volleyball career took him to Europe to play and coach on a professional indoor volleyball team for two seasons in the Swedish Elite League. Wes’s diverse playing ability suited his transition to beach volleyball and allowed him to have instant success on the world stage.
Jason began his beach volleyball career at a much earlier age. After playing with the Junior National team for two seasons at the age of 18, he began playing professional beach volleyball on a variety of domestic tours throughout the world. He achieved immediate success when he became the youngest beach volleyball player, at 17, to qualify for an FIVB world tour event in Cape Town, South Africa.
Community support, donations, and sponsorship form the backbone of Jason’s and Wes’s drive to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. By choosing to support them you will have a personal connection knowing that your money is going directly to the athletes and their travel and living costs. You have the opportunity to become part of an Olympic journey.
