Six Edmonton-based organizations can boast that they’ve got business smarts – with the credentials to prove it.

The six were honoured last week with Smart City Awards at the fourth annual awards luncheon. The recipients are:

* Workforce Quality Award – WCB Alberta. The award cited the WCB for giving its employees opportunities to pursue personal continuing education and training.

* Research and Technology Award – Micralyne Inc. Micralyne offers micro-electro-mechanical systems and micro-fabrication technology, developing components and subcomponents that improve telecommunications and bio-analysis instrumentation.

* Educational Partnership Award – United Way of the Alberta Capital Region. The United Way was cited for its Tools for Schools program, which helps ensure all Edmonton students receive necessary educational supplies including basic pens and pencils, binders and workbooks. Now in its seventh year, the program saw a record $159,959 in donations that helped more than 4,700 Edmonton students.

* Innovative Teaching Award – J. Percy Page School. The school’s partnership with Shaw Communications has provided a dedicated fibre-optic backbone that provides the school with high-speed access to the Internet. This initiative has resulted in innovative teaching strategies implementing technology across all curricular areas.

* Smart Business Award – Lilydale Co-operatives Ltd. Lilydale is a diversified food-processing company considered to be a leader in the North American poultry industry. The award cited Lilydale’s customizing products by taking into account changing market demands and being sensitive to food safety, the humane handling of animals and respect for the environment.

* Quality of Life Award – Open Doors For Kids. Through a partnership of more than 30 agencies serving children and families, Open Doors For Kids provides opportunities for children from low-income families.
